YMCA and Robinson team up to build new
recreation center

A YMCA and Robinson Memorial center along the intersection of routes 14 and 43 is expected to  open by 2009. City Council President Pete Buczkowski said the YMCA will be located on a separate floor than the hospital and as of right now it will not include a swimming pool. This is due to the fact that the liability will be too costly.

“I was really hoping it would have a swimming pool,” math teacher and head football coach Mr. John Arlesic said. He was hoping that the football team would be able to use the swimming pool for practice on the weekends after games.

Arlesic said the swimming would be very therapeutic and help increase blood flow for his players. He is now considering how big the gym will be at the YMCA because that is the determining factor to whether or not the football team will weight lift there.

Groundbreaking will begin in the spring and the estimated construction costs are at $25 to $30 million. The building will be three stories high and cover 88,000 square feet.

The YMCA will cover 15,430 square feet and will include a variety of weights, machines, and it will also include an area for groups to hold events and be able to serve food.

The Robinson Memorial part of the facility will have various medical portions including areas for MRIs, CT scans, mammograms, family practices, physical therapy and maybe even a dentist’s office.

Buczkowski said the building is not going to be a “green facility,” meaning it will run on fossil fuels instead of solar power.

“I love the idea of having something like the Natatorium in Cuyahoga Falls,” english teacher Mr. Jim Boardwine said. He hopes it will “encourage the community to come together, to be fit.”

Junior Cory Lanterman feels that our sports teams will “benefit a lot” from the new facility. He said it is indoors so “we can use it in the winter.” He too feels that the YMCA would be better with a swimming pool. “We don’t have a lot of stuff in Streetsboro,” and Lanterman feels a swimming pool would have been a place to go.

Overall, Arlesic feels the facility will be “great” because it is “a positive structure going up.”

“I probably won’t use it only because I have workout equipment at home,” Boardwine said. However he “definitely will check it out.”
