Yonish, Grigoli win Oscar gold

The Oscars may be in a few days but the high school’s version of the Hollywood red carpet took place last Saturday.

The king and queen of the Hollywood A-List were seniors Chris Yonish and Jessica Grigoli.

Students were greeted by the paparazzi and Hollywood legends Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe.

“It was a great theme,” said senior Amanda Coates. “It was different. I wouldn’t have picked Hollywood.”

Freshman Dustin Monro agreed with Coates, saying the stars, glitter and red carpet decorations were nice touches.

“I thought the theme was great! Some people dressed in part to the theme,” said Yonish. He said senior Sarah Novotny, who was on court, dressed Marilyn Monroe-esque.

Coates said the crowning of king and queen has always been her favorite event at the dance.

“I was excited because I wasn’t expecting it,” said Grigoli. “I got a lot of calls because I was the first one in my family to win anything like that.”

Yonish also felt good about winning.

“It felt amazing, it felt pretty good,” Yonish said. “I want to say congratulations it was easy and fun to dance to”.

Grigoli said Claussen “did a fabulous job.”

“The dj was amazing and he looked good too,” said Yonish.

A few students that attended the dance felt a few things could be different.

“Even though I didn’t have a date, there weren’t too many slow songs.” said Phillips. “I felt bad for the couples who were there.”

Coates agreed with Phillips and also put in the fact there could have been “at least a few more”.

Monro had a more positive attitude towards the slow songs.

“My favorite part was the first slow song, “Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney. My girlfriend and I were waiting for it all night.” said Monro.

J. Michael was at this year’s dance and took pictures in the cafeteria and throughout the dance.

“J. Michael made me feel like the superstar I was while he was going around snapping pictures like the paparazzi.

Coates and Phillips agreed that not as many people showed up to the dance as they would have thought.

“I was shocked.” said Coates.

On the 2008 Winterball Court were freshmen Natalie Digioia and Nick Price; sophomores Dan Spindler and Katelyn Alesci; juniors Robert Wilson, Kelsey Cianci, Jan Sohlmann and Amanda Blostic. Senior boy nominees for an “Oscar®” were Ryan Stainbrook, Ben Claussen, Doug Tackett and Yonish. The senior girls were Stacie Lesher, Andrea Medina, Sarah Novotny, and Grigoli.

After the crowning ceremony was over, people got back to the Hollywood night.

Junior Denise Phillips liked the dancing and having fun with friends.

“It was good.” said Phillips. “Ben [Claussen] always does a great job dj-ing.”

Monro felt the same about the music as Phillips did, saying “it was known , so it was easy and fun to dance to”.

Grigoli said Claussen “did a fabulous job.”

“The dj was amazing and he looked good too,” said Yonish.
