Program Details
Our Rocket Reader Program is funded through a grant from the Streetsboro Education Foundation. This group is made up of numerous businesses in the area. The grant allowed for a reward system to be set up for Henry Defer Intermediate School. The rewards are based on the number of Accelerated Reader points a student has earned. (Accelerated Reader) is a computer program that labels books with reading levels and point values. After the student has read a book of his/her choosing; they will take a comprehension test on the computer. The AR program generates a print out of the number of questions they answered correctly. This percentage is translated into points. The computer also keeps track of the points each student has earned. Prizes are handed out every Friday. Overall, this reward system has motivated the students to read books that are on their reading level and try new genres of literature they may not have considered.
